Your Champions: Tommy Dix nominated for Sporting Champion of the Year award

A BOXING stalwart who knows everything there is to know about the sport has been nominated for a Your Champions award for passing on his knowledge to members of a Saltney boxing club.

Tommy Dix, 70, has been helping out at Deva Police Amateur Boxing Club (ABC), Sandy Lane, giving tips, advice and contacts to children, boxers and coaches.

Mark Shepherd, Deva Police ABC coach, paid tribute to Tommy’s involvement with the club.

He said: “He’s there at the club twice a week, watching children and giving boxing advice to them.

“He’s taken them to meet big names such as Robin Reid, Pat Barratt and Brian Hughes, getting them signed pictures. He is very highly regarded by the children, they all look up to him.”

Mark is also thankful for Tommy’s knowledge of boxing and boxers, both at professional and amateur level.

He added: “I don’t know how he does it, I don’t think there’s anyone in boxing he doesn’t know.

“He went to Belgium recently to look at Belgian boxers, training youngsters in Limburg, and has been to Ireland with more contacts there.

“He knows people of all ages, giving them contacts so they can find a match. He has given us that much help.

“People go to Tommy first for advice, he has been around for a long time, being involved in boxing for most of his life. He has been great for me and the club, helping boxers and coaches, he is just phenomenal.”
