CONSIDERED the main entrance to the city of Chester, the Eastgate has always been situated at the same site as the original Eastgate of the Roman fortress.
The medieval Eastgate, possibly built in the 14th century, resembled the Kings Gate at Caenarvon Castle.
The current Eastgate was built by a Mr Hayden in 1768-9, when the medieval gates were replaced by bridges.
The Eastgate clock was added at the end of the 19th century to mark Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee.
