King Charles' Tower, Chester

ALSO known as the Phoenix Tower or the Newton Tower, King Charles' Tower looks out over the suburb of Newton and was used as a meeting place for the city guilds after 1613.

The tower was badly damaged during the Civil War and was later restored in 1658.

The plaque on the tower reads: 'King Charles stood on this tower Sept 24th 1645 and saw his army defeated on Rowton Moor'. This was more likely to be a reference to later battles on Hoole Heath, as Rowton is not visible from the tower.
