CHESTER'S Town Hall is an impressive example of Gothic revival situated on Northgate Street.
The Town Hall replaced the former Exchange building that stood in the middle of the square until it burned down in 1862.
It was built in 1864-69 in the 13th century Gothic style by William Henry Lynn of Belfast and was inspired by Cloth Hall in Ypres, Belgium.
Interesting features include:
* Carvings above the porch
* Bust of George V in the Waiting Hall
* Sculptures of Edward the Black Prince & Henry VII
* War memorial
* 'Chester Today' tapestry
* Victorian stained glass windows
* Portraits of Chester's Norman Earls
The former armorial bearings of Chester can be found in the Assembly Room with the city motto, 'Antiqui Colant Antiquum Dierum' which translates as 'Let the ancients worship the ancient of days'.
