The Clywedog Trail passes the mill and winds from Minera Lead Mines to King’s Mill, passing Plas Power Woods and Offa’s Dyke, the Bersham Heritage Centre and Iron Works and Erddig Estate.
The original mill was probably for fulling – thickening woven cloth – but by the 18th century Nant Mill was a corn mill. It is now a Visitor Centre and includes a gift shop, light refreshments, information leaflets and a variety of entertainment for children such as a giant mole tunnel, minibeast display and wooden pigs near the children’s playground. There is also a bird hide and bird ‘thrones’ to be discovered.
The woodland contains both conifers and broadleaved trees including beech, ash, oak and hazel. And depending on the time of year you will find snowdrops, bluebells, wild garlic, wood anemones and a variety of wild orchids in the open meadows.
The Mill is home to Lesser Horseshoe Bats who live in the tunnel and Pipistrelles who live in the roof. By the riverside you can find dark brown and white dippers, grey wagtails, kingfishers and herons. Over fifty varieties of fungi, including fly agaric, stinkhorn and giant puffball have been recorded in the dense woodland surrounding the Mill.
The river is popular for duck races, a great way to raise funds for charities or schools. Ducks can be hired from the Visitor Centre with prior arrangement.
