The High Cross

SITUATED on the crossroads that joins Watergate Street, Northgate Street, Bridge Street and Eastgate Street, the Cross was first mentioned in the city records in 1377.

During the Civil War, it was a rallying point for Royalists.

The monument was demolished after the Civil War and it's components scattered. The base is now in Llangollen while the top section, carved with biblical figures, disappeared without trace.

The remaining column was found hidden under the steps of St Peter's Church in 1820 but was not restored to it's original site until 1975.

Today the Cross is the place at which people gather to see Chester's Town Crier.
