The Bridgegate

The Bridgegate, Chester

THE current Bridgegate was designed by Joseph Turner and built in 1782. It replaced the medieval gateway, which had two towers on each side.

There was also a high octagonal water tower on the west side of the gate that supplied most of the town with water from the river.

This was an important gate because it guarded the main route into the city from Wales and was therefore sometimes referred to as the Welshgate.
