NEIL Young believes a ‘very small minority’ of Blues fans went too far in their criticism of Martin Gritton in what proved to be the striker’s final game for Chester FC.
Gritton, who this week returned to the Football League by signing for Yeovil Town, was given a rough ride by some travelling supporters during Saturday’s loss at Lancaster City.
While the Blues boss accepts the former Torquay and Macclesfield frontman played poorly, he feels the abuse he received was over the top.
Young said: “Football is all about opinions and debate – that’s what makes it so great and I’m all for it.
“But there is a difference between expressing an opinion or showing your dissatisfaction and in some cases verbally abusing a player, and I thought a very small minority overstepped the mark.
“Irrespective of what it was, on that day he was a Chester player.”
Gritton made a promising start to his brief Blues career when he scored one goal and had a hand in three others in last month’s 5-0 win at Clitheroe.
Although his performances dipped, Young was still sad to him go to Yeovil, who play five levels higher than Chester in League One.
The Blues host Harrogate Railway Athletic on Saturday, a game which kicks off at 1pm to avoid clashing with England’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales. They entertain Curzon Ashton next Wednesday (7.45pm).
