Roberts has earned a rest

KEVIN Roberts may be rested by Simon Davies tomorrow as the Blues boss is eager to protect the teenage star from burnout.

The versatile 18-year-old has started 30 matches for City this season and has been used in a variety of positions – from centre-back to full-back to central midfield and even left wing (at Chesterfield in February).

During that time, Roberts has become an integral part of the first-team set-up – making it impossible for Davies to drop the Liverpool-born teenager while Chester’s Football League fate hung in the balance.

But now City are safe from the drop, Davies may opt to hand Roberts a well-earned rest for tomorrow’s home game against Macclesfield (3pm).

The Blues manager said: “We’ll be putting our strongest team out to win the game. The only one I would toy with leaving out is maybe Kevin Roberts. He looks dead on his feet right now. I’ll be having a chat with Kevin.”

Kevin Ellison remains sidelined with a thigh injury, but Chris Holroyd stands a chance of being involved against the Silkmen as he is close to overcoming his hamstring problems.

Macclesfield – also now safe from relegation – are expected to field an experimental side.

Davies said: “I’ve heard that they’re making a few changes and trying a few younger players. We’ve been doing that for the last few months!”

The Blues are close to announcing details of their pre-season programme. Two matches will be played at the Deva Stadium, including one against a Championship side.
