Sandwith returns in stunning fashion

KEVIN Sandwith delivered a timely reminder of his talents at Edgar Street on Saturday.

The 28-year-old midfielder is out of contract this summer and has struggled to nail down a regular place in Chester’s squad. But his spectacular goal in City’s 2-2 draw will have done his chances of extending his Deva stay no harm whatsoever.

So would Sandwith like to remain with the Blues?

He said: “Yes, hopefully I can start again on Saturday at home to Lincoln, but we’ll see how things go throughout this week.

“I just want to play in every game from now until the end of the season.

“I just go out and try and give 100% – sometimes it comes off, other times it doesn’t, but it was just nice to play well.”

Sandiwth arrived at Chester in the summer of 2006 as a specialist left-back, but he can also turn his hand to playing in midfield – and that is where he was deployed in an injury-hit Blues line-up against Hereford.

“I’m enjoying my central midfield role, but it’s just nice to be playing at the moment,” said the former Macclesfield skipper. “It’s been a frustrating season to be honest, so anywhere I play at the moment I’m happy with.”

Sandwith was understandably proud of his 68th-minute wonder goal at Hereford, which sparked the visitors’ comeback. It was is a leading contender for Chester’s goal of the season.

Sandwith said: “We were up against it for the second half but we came out, did well, battled hard, and started to get into the game a bit more – it was just nice to get the goal.

“I’ve hit a few shots similar, but I don’t think there has been any better – it looked pretty good from where I was standing.”

The ball whistled into the back of the net from Sandwith’s left foot, giving Hereford’s former Chester keeper Wayne Brown no chance.

“It doesn’t really matter who was in goal – he wasn’t going to stop that shot, was he?” quipped Sandwith.
