Grimsby Town 1 Chester City 2

HARD work brought good fortune to Bobby Williamson's side as they maintained their unbeaten away record by ruining Grimsby's unblemished home record.

In a game that ebbed and flowed, the Mariners had the better chances and more frequently unlocked Chester's defence and but for another sterling display from John Danby, it may have been the Blues walking away with nothing.

Chester took the lead in the 10th minute when Richie Partridge deftly skipped past Tom Newey. The Grimsby full-back pulled on his arm and the linesman flagged the foul.

Town stopped, expecting a whistle which never came, as Partridge crossed the ball in for John Murphy to head past the static Grimsby keeper.

The Mariners wiped out the deficit in the 24th minute when Peter Till found space down the right to cross and Danny Boshell stole in to head past Danby.

Kevin Ellison shone throughout the game, seeming to pop up everywhere and he sealed the points for Chester just four minutes after the restart.

Substitute Simon Yeo turned his man and fired a brilliant shot past keeper Phil Barnes but it struck the post and rolled out to Ellison 12 yards out who made no mistake slotting the ball home.

Grimsby Town: Barnes, Newey (Jones 52), Clarke, Mulligan (Whittle 73), Fenton, Till, Bolland, Toner, Boshell, Bennett, Rankin (Taylor 63). Subs: Montgomery, Bore.

Chester City: Danby, Marples, Butler, Linwood, Wilson, Ellison, Hughes, Grant (Sandwith 45), Partridge, Lowndes (Yeo 41), Murphy. Subs: Palethorpe, Rutherford, Carroll.
