CHESHIRE Jets coach Paul Smith is hoping the 2010-2011 season will bring the best out of Calvin Davis.
The 6ft 8in forward re-signed for the club this week which will take him into his eighth season at Northgate Arena.
Davis spent a large spell on the sidelines last season with an injury, but coach Smith knows the Jets have retained the services of a quality basketball player.
“We’ve known Calvin obviously for quite some time and I’ve got a good relationship with him,” said Smith. “I still think, despite all the bad luck with injuries, he still has potential for being one of the top five or top 10 players in the league.
“I think he still feels he’s got a good chunk of his career left ahead of him. He’s very, very motivated and the Calvin Davis we want back is the old Calvin Davis we know – the super athlete, the great shooter, the guy that everybody wants around. That’s the one we’ve recruited and if that’s the one that turns up, then that’s great.”
The American, whose first spell with the Chester club was back in 2001, is very much a favourite with the Jets faithful.
Davis impressed in the latter stages of last term and the former Everton Tiger is relishing another stint at the Northgate.
He said: “It’s great that the team and management supported me after my injury and still have me in their plans on moving the club forward.
“Last year, we managed a top-four finish and two final appearances, but this season I really want to go all the way and bring some silverware back to Cheshire.
“I know the fans will give me as much support over the coming months as they have done before.”
